Business Engagement in Public Schools: School Administrator Perceptions Regarding Business Partnerships within North Carolina's Public Schools

The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to examine the characteristics of existing business/industry partnerships within North Carolina's public schools, student opportunities that are products of these partnerships, and perceptions of school administrators regarding business engagement. A survey instrument was electronically distributed across North Carolina to all high school principals, superintendents, and local career and technical education administrators. The qualitative responses to this study showed that there is a significant number and mix in the quantity and types of business partnerships. New partnerships and business engagement activities are being planned and there are positive student outcomes as a product of these partnerships. The quantitative analysis was mixed, but the responses from participants suggest that several individuals within business and industry are actively participating, non-business partners are active, and that most partnerships receive at best an informal evaluation of effectiveness. In terms of school administrator perceptions, the data suggests that district-level administrators have a higher rating of business involvement compared to principals. The study concludes with future implications and potential research in the area of business involvement within public schools.
