Cybercrime and the Underground Economy

Crime can vary greatly from robbing a bank with guns to illegally transferring money with just a few keystrokes. The latter, known as cybercrime, has enabled the growth of an economy that is hidden well within the depths of the internet. As technology has become more advanced, cybercrime and the underground economy also have grown and adapted. This paper will explain how cybercrime has grown over the years and its effect on the legal system. It also will describe different strategies used today to mitigate cybercrime, including the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the International Cybercrime Convention. Finally, this paper will reveal who cybercriminals are and how they operate, what is sold in the deep web and who the victims are of cybercrime.
