The underground economy of organized cybercrime deals with the hidden black markets that thrive on the sale of goods and services pertaining to information-based crimes. These markets are housed in the dark corners of the Internet, conducting business using stolen financial information, account credentials, illegal drugs, and murder for hire. While many operating in these environments do so as individuals, there is increasing evidence to suggest these markets are being dominated by sophisticated, organized criminal groups located around the world. These organizations operate with a number of technically proficient individuals who have demonstrated ways to continuously innovate new ways to carry out financially motivated attacks, all while evading the eyes of the law. As this environment has grown over the past 15 to 20 years, there is still a limited understanding on the specifics of how these groups function, as well as what can be done to mitigate their activities. Law enforcement agencies have begun launching several campaigns against those involved, and private sector groups are actively researching ways to defend the information of themselves and their clients. Understanding this economy, as well as what exactly is being done and also evaluating what techniques are effective is a necessary first step to addressing this growing problem.
