摘要

Repetitive laboratory testing is an essential practice for patient care. However, recent changes in reimbursement regulations have restricted cost recovery for ordered tests. The purpose of this study is to design and support a model for the implementation of the clinical doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Sciences into the healthcare team to help reduce overall costs. This is a retrospective cohort design that will utilize descriptive statistics. A data warehouse was created for this study that included a study population of seventy adult patients randomly selected from the SICU, CCU, and MICU of an area hospital. Results from the chart reviews of patients were entered into a computer data base. Comparisons of the number of patient laboratory studies among various tests such as complete blood counts (CBC), basic metabolic panel (BMP), prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (APTT), international normalized ratio (INR), and hemoglobin and hematocrit (H&H;) were included in the study. Established clinically significant parameters were utilized to determine the need for repetitive laboratory testing.
