Cultural impact on management styles: A cross-cultural study between Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.

The primary purpose of this research is to examine if there is any relationship between management styles and culture. The identification of this relationship may be helpful in explaining managerial behavior decisions. Data from this study was collected in both countries Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. The differences were determined on the basis of the cultural dimensions of Dr. Geert Hoftstede and the Leadership Opinion Questionnaire (LOQ) of Dr. Edward Fleishman.;An analysis was conducted by using the survey approach with a distribution of the questionnaire to 195 managers from Puerto Rico and 173 managers of Dominican Republic in education, service, manufacturing, tourism and other industries. The comparison of the subject scores was utilized to determine the relationship of the variables and if there is a significant differences on management styles. Review of the literature was presented in this study. The significant level used was .10.;The results of the study presented that there were significant differences in the cultural dimensions of power distance and masculinity/feminism and their relationship with democratic and paternalistic management styles. The analyses show that there were no differences in the cultural dimensions of uncertainty avoidance and individualism/collectivism and their relationship with democratic and paternalistic management styles. The findings are expected to contribute to management and international business studies.
