The purpose of this dissertation is to serve as a manual of analysis methodologies for making the hydrologic analysis phase of hydropower studies. The flow duration curve approach is stressed throughout the dissertation. Techniques are presented for making hydrologic analyses in both unregulated and regulated streams.; The problem of estimating flow duration curves at ungaged points in unregulated streams is addressed first. Three analyses techniques, which were developed in a hydropower survey of the Pacific Northwest Region, are presented. All three of these methods rely on the use of normal annual precipitation data in the development of the analyses techniques.; A method for predicting flows at ungaged points in regulated streams is also presented. This method involves using measured or estimated outflows from control structures along with a technique of obtaining natural inflows from tributary areas. A computer program has been developed and is presented for applying the method. A complex users manual for this program including flow diagrams, program listing, and example problems is contained in Appendix B of the dissertation.; Some results of applying the methods described to a large scale hydropower inventory are also presented. A study plan is also discussed for evaluating the effects of uncertainties in hydrologic prediction on the economic analyses phases of hydropower studies. The actual study of this problem will be completed at a later date.; The appendices to the dissertation contain many programs for programmable calculators and computers that are very useful for making the hydrologic analysis phases of a hydropower study. These appendices include programs to make calculations for and to plot flow determine duration curves, programs for determining power and energy production from a hydrosite and programs for determining flows in a highly regulated stream system. Each program write up contains a complete listing of the program and samples of using the program on a real problem.; This dissertation should be useful to anyone making hydrologic analyses for use in hydropower studies or for anyone interested in determining the flow duration curves at ungaged points in a river system.
