Typically, plastics are injection molded or cold formed. However, thermoplastics and especially engineering materials are not injection molded and then cold formed. This investigation focused on injection molding polycarbonate-based resins, cooling the parts to room temperature, followed by a process that cold forms the same parts and ensures that the parts continue to function under load. Various grades of polycarbonate were investigated along with other engineering resins alloys. Performance credentials, including impact toughness, dimensional stability, and structural integrity were characterized as a function of end-use service temperatures. For each material, parts were molded in two different geometries, and tested under the same conditions. Results were compared in a pass/fail nonparametric fashion as well as actual tabulated results.
