The Peruvian born Mario Vargas Llosa is among Latin America's most eager and professional writers. In addition to sustaining a steady stream of major novels, he continues to publish papers on literary issues and social criticism, as well as plays. He lectures at major international institutions and participates continuously in different kinds of cultural and political activities.;This dissertation treats Vargas Llosa's novelistic production as seen from the vantage point of two fundamental aspects: (a) literary production, analyzing the features which identify it; and (b) social criticism, taking into account how it is carried out and concentrating on its targets and recipients. Moreover, it examines the variations these two aspects have undergone through time, and the different ideological positions Vargas Llosa has adopted since the early 1960s.;We begin by studying the evolution of the Spanish American novel from the early days of the present century in order to place Vargas Llosa within that process. We explain in detail the author's concepts of the novel and the novelist, following the critical terms he used in critical books, papers and lectures. We then proceed with a study of what we identify as Vargas Llosa's first stage, observing the development of his ideological position and his literary production at that time. We place in that first stage La ciudad y los perros (1963), La casa verde (1965) and Conversacion en la Catedral (1969). We then analyze his period of ideological and literary transition marked by Pantaleon y las visitadoras (1973). Finally, we deal with his second stage as it appears in La tia Julia y el escribidor (1977) and La querra del fin del mundo (1981). In all three periods we emphasize the relationships of ideology and literature since we propose that for any given ideological tenet, Vargas Llosa has modified his literary approach and mode of literary response.
