This investigation represents the first detailed study of the genesis and classification of forest soil pedons in the mountains of Central Taiwan. Three pedons, developed from the most common bedrock materials (Tertiary shales, siltstones and sandstones) have been studied. These pedons developed under a subtropical climatic regime and warm-temperate montane rain forest vegetation at about 700 m a.s.l.;Pedon 2, a "Typic Dystrochrept, fine, illitic, thermic", developed on shales on ;Pedon 3, a "Typic Hapludult, fine-loamy, siliceous, thermic", developed on sandstones on ;This investigation reveals the dominant soil forming factors and pedogenic processes of forest soils in the studied area and also demonstrates the utility of Soil Taxonomy for application to classifying forest soils in the mountains of central Taiwan.;Pedon 1, a "Typic Dystrochrept, fine, vermiculitic, thermic", developed on fine siltstones on 2% slopes. Melanization and loosening have occurred, and braunification has produced a cambic Bw horizon.
