Superstring theory is a unique candidate for the unification of all fundamental interactions. As such, superstring theory should reproduce the Standard Model of elementary gauge interactions. In this thesis I study how the Standard Model may be derived from the string by using the free fermionic formulation. I study the construction of string spin structure models. I argue that the most natural number of chiral generations in this construction is only three. I investigate the construction of Standard-like Models and present an explicit example. I explore the phenomenological implications of this class of models. I argue that the requirement of proton stability necessitates the existence of an additional
