Case study of changing land use in the Middle Hills of Lombok, Central Sulawesi.

The case study reports on a group of Lauje farmers practicing shifting agriculture in an upland area of Central Sulawesi. The study site is located on steep slopes with altitudes ranging up to a thousand meters. The study describes some of the bio-physical as well as social, political, cultural and economic conditions and how these affect the farmers' decision-making processes.;Some farmers have started to plant cocoa, cashew and candlenut trees as cash crops. The study presents some of the causes for the introduction of these tree crops and how this change might impact on some of the human and environmental conditions. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).;The farmers practice a shifting, subsistence agriculture with some cash cropping. The major food crops are corn and cassava. In addition, some of the farmers in the lower altitude grow rice, while those in the upper altitude grow taro. Shallots are grown as a cash crop in the lower altitude while the upper area is more suitable for cultivation of garlic as a cash crop.
