Marketization and prosperity: Pathways to East Asian democracy.

This paper uses an econometric model of seven East and Southeast nations (China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand) over a twenty year period and four comparative historical country studies (China, Indonesia, Korea, and Taiwan) to analyze the relationship between marketization and democracy. The quantitative approach conducts regression analyses on cross county time series data to explain the linkages between economic and political liberalization while accounting for technological innovation, internationalization and prosperity. The possibility of reverse causality between political and economic openness is also examined. The qualitative country studies reinforce and enhance the model outcomes by exploring the particular histories of the four nations and drawing conclusions regarding the processes through which a country can transition toward economic and political liberalization. The findings from both approaches inform the policy implications and recommendations offered in the concluding chapter.
