Detection of East Asian layout features and reconstruction of East Asian layout features is provided. Vertically written text in fixed format documents is detected and rotated for layout analysis. After layout analysis, the rotated text is rotated and reconstructed again in the flow format document. When a plurality of characters are written horizontally in a vertical text line, vertically overlapping text runs, referred to as horizontal-in-vertical text, are detected and reconstructed as horizontal in-vertical text in the flow format document. . Lines of text are analyzed for the properties of the rubi line, designated as rubi text associated with the corresponding text in the ruby base line, and reconstructed as rubi text in the flow format document. The text in the fixed-format document is analyzed for detection of a specific East Asian language so that a font for the language is specified in the fluid-format document.
