A study on the prose of Fu Shan.

In the second half of the 17th century, China witnessed the surrogate of the Ming Dynasty by the Qing, and a variety of prose and poetry produced by the adherents of the Ming expressing their anti-Manchu sentiments under the new reign. These works were conditioned by the socio-cultural and historical contexts, lamenting over the collapse of the Ming dynasty.;This thesis focuses on one of the adherents of the Ming, Fu Shan (1607--1684), a versatile scholar with great accomplishments in the classical scholarship, medical studies, calligraphy and painting, whose prose works make explicit his Confucian values and unbending rectitude.;To shed light upon Fu Shan's character, this thesis first traces Fu's endeavour to save his master, his imprisonment and rejection of honours, and then offers an analysis of his thoughts which upheld blending of intelligence and ethics.;This is followed by an account of the three main themes (ethics, virtue and originality) and two styles (fastidious and marvellous) of Fu Shan's prose works and the relationship of these features to his trait.;From the themes and styles of his works we could see that Fu Shan's Confucian inclination and preference, as well as his creative works which were built on a foundation of classical scholarship.;In conclusion, Fu Shan attached great importance to the virtue and talents, his prose works are in harmony with his idiosyncrasy.
