摘要

This study described and analyzed the roles and responsibilities of board of trustee members related to endowment management and development at institutions affiliated with the specialized colleges of nursing and health sciences in the United States. By the nature of their existence, specialized colleges of nursing and health sciences are more vulnerable to financial strains than their university counterparts. These specialized colleges may find their survival threatened because of the need for the affiliated health care organization to streamline their operations. This study seeks to provide insight into how board of trustee (BOT) members are involved in endowment management and development.; Thirty-two private, independent specialized colleges of nursing and health sciences that offered an associate degree or a baccalaureate degree and had a board of trustees for the college of nursing were surveyed. Responses from 27 colleges were received either from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the chairperson of the BOT, or both.; Descriptive statistics were utilized to describe factors related to the roles and responsibilities of board of trustee members. Dependent t-tests were utilized to compare the responses from CEOs and chairpersons of the BOT from the same colleges for internal and external environmental factors related to endowment development and management.; CEOs from 70% of specialized colleges of nursing responded that one of their goals was to become financially independent of their affiliated healthcare institution. It was found that CEOs and chairpersons of the BOT agree that endowment management and development is a responsibility of the BOT. However, both the CEOs and the chairpersons perceived that BOT members are not actively involved in endowment development or endowment management. Few colleges provide training related to endowment management and development or have written policies for BOT members to follow.
