The influence of various plant species: two leguminous trees, two leguminous covercrops and two grasses, on the microbial biomass and related parameters was evaluated in a highly eroded soil of the Corozal series (clayey, mixed isohyperthermic, Aquic Haplohumults). Monthly samples were taken at two depths (0--5 and 5--15 cm) for eleven months. Microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen and soil organic matter were not significantly affected by plant species even though a tendency for higher values was observed for the grasses species over the other species. Microbial respiration was significantly affected by plant species and time. Higher microbial respiration values were found for the grasses species compared with their species. Microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomassa nitrogen was generally higher at the 0--5 cm depth. The microbial biomass in conjunction with other soil fertility parameters, adequately described changes in the quality of a highly degraded soil.
