This exploratory, descriptive, qualitative research study based in a critical theory framework, examines the perceived school experiences of students who are expelled, involved with juvenile probation or excluded from school using information from interviews, focus groups, personal timelines and school related documents. Many students resisted the conformity expected of them in school, attempting to control situations in ways they knew, often resulting in failure. They found success in elementary, alternative, and community schools, where they were heard, known and believed in by adults, and where they received personal attention academically, behaviorally, and emotionally. Students expressed optimism for the future and a belief that transformation is possible. According to the students, it is crucial that adults take time to listen to youth most at risk in their schools. Implications for schools and districts as well as recommendations for further study based on student feedback follow the themes of choices and consequences; communication and connection; personal responsibility and advocacy; and optimism and resilience. Specific strategies follow from these themes and are detailed in the conclusion.
