Development of an application for restaurant order taking using wireless handheld devices.

An increase in the use of handheld devices technology challenges researchers and developers in identifying specific areas where this technology may be appropriate as job assistance. Restaurant Ordering Process is one of such areas of challenging. Most of restaurants use technology to process orders but they still use the traditional method of pen and paper for taking the order at the customer table side. This thesis proposes the research of the restaurant order taking process and the development of a handheld application to support the wait staff ordering tasks.; This thesis describes the analysis process, identifies and studies the waitresses and waiters tasks, and describes the development of the graphical user interface for a handheld application. Also, it presents an usability test conducted to compare the performance and subjective satisfaction of the waitresses and waiters taking restaurant orders using both the handheld application and the traditional method of pen and paper.
