Past research has shown that increases in dimension part yield can be accomplished when unedged flitches are used during cut-up. Hardwood sawmills with dimension mills can produce fully manufactured grade lumber as well as unedged flitches that could be used to increase yield in the dimension mill. This research explored the potential of particular unedged flitches to provide increased dimension part yields over edged counterparts in pursuit of a differential edging practice for hardwood sawmills.;An increase in part area of 20%-30% occurred when flitches were processed versus edged counterparts boards. A positive linear relationship existed when overall area differences measured prior to part cut-up were used as a predictor for part area differences. This linear relationship decreased with more difficult cutting bills. Flitches with saddle back wane, and large differences in wane width, showed the most potential to increase dimension part yields. The influence of defects made predictions of part area differences less dependable.
