Quickly growing and changing knowledge requirements are beginning to strain the capabilities of the pavement industry's traditional training model. This model, where the employer makes key training decision and training is heavily weighted towards the instructor-led short course is straining to accommodate ever-increasing demands for currency, flexibility, and additional content. Self-managed learning (SML) is an alternate training model that makes individuals, rather than the employer, responsible for key diagnosis, goal, time and resource decisions concerning their own training. Paramount to the success of this model is the inclusion of self-directed learning (SDL) options; ones that rely on the direction and guidance of the learner. Because of their flexibility and independence, these options can substantially increase an individual's available training options. However, there are very few SDL training options within the pavement industry.; The Pavement Guide was motivated by this lack of options available to pavement professionals. The term "Pavement Guide " refers to an overall concept of a computer-based multimedia CD-ROM training tool used to provide general and detailed pavement knowledge. This concept has been used to produce several customized Pavement Guide versions, the largest of which consists of 275 Web pages, 2500 images, 50 animations, 14 videos, and 11,000 hyperlinks, all of which can be delivered on one CD-ROM.; Pavement Guide development followed a structured process centered on learning theory and usability. It is thought that a process grounded in these two fundamentals will have the highest probability of success. Validation results show that it is possible to make a high-quality well-received SDL multimedia product. First, highly positive user reactions to the Pavement Guide, as measured by a multimedia attitude survey in two pilot trials and two pilot tests, indicate the Pavement Guide is well-received by users. Second, a pretest-posttest learning evaluation indicates that users can and do learn from their interaction with the Pavement Guide.
