Toward theoretical foundations for gift-based lay ministry in the Presbyterian Church in Korea (PCK).

This study is designed to present theoretical foundations for gift-based lay ministry in the Presbyterian Church in Korea (PCK). In particular, this dissertation is written for the purpose of removing three obstacles which hinder gift-based lay ministry in the PCK. Through each part, each obstacle is examined and a solution for the obstacle is given.; In Part I, the traditional roles of clergy and laity which block a supportive environment for gift-based lay ministry is discussed. For the purpose of this, the theology of ordination and its application to gift-based lay ministry in the PCK are examined. This study also explores the ministry role of laity from the perspective of the early church.; In Part II, the fear of laity's use of spiritual gifts will be examined. For the purpose of this, the factors that have lead to misconceptions regarding gifts in the Korean Church is examined. In particular, theology of gifts in relation to Christology and ecclesiology is discussed in order to supplement the defect of traditional pneumatology in the Korean Church.; Likewise, Clinton's giftedness theory is evaluated in order to introduce it to the PCK as a suitable giftedness theory to apply. Additionally, the PCK pastors' understanding of, and attitude toward spiritual gifts will be analyzed through a survey.; In Part III, the old church system structure which frustrates laity's use of its gifts in the PCK is examined. For the purpose of this, the traditional small-group church structure of the PCK is reviewed and a modern small group church structure that is relevant to a PCK gift-based lay ministry in the 21st century is provided.
