摘要

In a climate of evidence-based practice and empirically validated treatments, the literature in support of equine therapy as an intervention with veterans is scarce. This study evaluated an existing program of equine therapy for veterans with PTSD and PTSD symptoms (N=7) through thematic analysis of qualitative interviews of veteran participants and case study analysis that included outcome measures for PTSD symptoms, mindfulness, and quality of life. Themes identified in the data included relationships, care and compassion, and mental health. Participants discussed positive changes in relationships including being less socially isolated and having more peer support, opening up, developing trust, improving communication, and feeling understood and accepted. Participants described positive changes in mental health such as increased awareness of feelings; increased positive feelings; less anger, aggression and force; greater sense of mastery; greater engagement; improved self-esteem; improved coping; and reduction of symptoms related to trauma, depression, and anxiety. Participants also discussed important aspects of the program such as natural horsemanship, the role of equine therapy in mental health treatment, and ways to improve the program. The results of this study suggest that equine therapy is a promising treatment for PTSD and PTSD symptoms in veterans and that equine therapy may be effective for other mental health problems such as depression and anxiety; improving social functioning; and enhancing quality of life. The results of this study would need to be replicated and examined further qualitatively and quantitatively to provide further evidence for the efficacy of equine therapy for veterans.
