Water-blown rigid polyurethane foams were produced by interaction of partially defatted soy flour with polyether polyol, Isocyanate, surfactant, catalyst and distilled water. Extended foams were also tested for microbiology, biodegradability and surface morphology. Microbiological examination was accomplished by carrying out by standard plate count and yeast and mold count. Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation were carried out by immersing the foam samples in aerobic wastewater and anaerobic sludge respectively. Results of microbiological examination showed that microbes were not able to fully synthesize extended polyurethane as a carbon source. Aerobic an anaerobic biodegradation produced similar results. Scanning electron micrographs showed absence of pitting indicating incomplete degradation by the wastewater treatment of the foam. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
