Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) has become an important enabler of wireless communications. In addition to being a key part of the current standards, Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), it is also an integral part of upcoming techniques such as Coordinated Multipoint Transmission/Reception (CoMP). This thesis works on three groups of MIMO systems: single-user MIMO and multi-user MIMO systems, analog network coding systems, and CoMP systems. For each group, it works on two issues: (a) finding the theoretical performance limits for various MIMO systems and (b) finding ways to practically implement MIMO techniques such that their theoretical potential is reached. Concerning the theoretical issue, the thesis proposes various transceiver designs. These designs show the achievable performance and/or provide physical insights for their respective systems. Concerning the practical issue, the thesis proposes various joint transceiver and signaling designs. These designs carefully consider how to minimize the signaling load while maximizing the system performance. Actually, some obtain performances, under certain conditions, at least as good as that of centralized, theoretical designs. Naturally, such designs address the theoretical issue as well. Lastly, concerning both the theoretical and practical issues, the thesis carries out a rigorous investigation into the underlying physical mechanisms of several optimum transceiver designs. Such insights may be beneficial in work concerning either issue.
