The study was conducted to optimize stem cutting propagation of Ludisia discolor. Known as the jewel orchid because of its variegated foliage, L. discolor has been reported to require up to twelve weeks between sticking cuttings and sufficient root initiation to support subsequent plant growth. Reducing propagation time could increase the economic feasibility of growing L. discolor for the houseplant industry. Rooting substrate, root zone heating, and/or auxin concentration were tested, followed by a study of cutting size, type, and planting orientation. Several conditioning treatments were also tested, including gibberellic acid soak, wounding, and/or soaking in water. Optimal rooting (the greatest number of roots were produced at a length comparable to commercial rooted cuttings in minimal time) was achieved in four weeks using 6 cm terminal cuttings planted vertically in BM1 substrate with application of 0.1% IBA and 20--25°C bottom heat.
