摘要

Recent critical interest in early modern rape narratives has focused upon the rhetorical and historical link between these literary texts and their Roman and medieval precursors. This dissertation builds upon that work, exploring the dialogic relationship between cultural products, such as poetry and drama, and medical and legal theories to produce the silent rape victim.;"The Influence of Misogyny on Early Modern Rape Laws," surveys rape law in England from its earliest beginnings, offering original translations of Anglo-Saxon and Latin legal code and considering the role of social class in prosecution of cases of rape. Legal theory and medical theory worked dialogically with early modern conduct books to support the notion that a chaste woman cannot be raped.;"The Rape of Philomela: Silence and Speech," investigates the role of the Philomela myth in the construction of the silenced rape victim. Narratives such as Philomela's, along with conduct books which served as a conduit for patriarchal ideology, and led to the construction of the chaste, silent and obedient woman. The poetic purpose of recapitulating Philomela's rape varied, but involved either a diminishment of the raped woman's pain or identification with the Philomela figure as analogue for the censored poet. "The Rape of Lucrece and the Destruction of the Feminine Ideal," explores the link between sight, male desire and the more stringent requirements for married women's chastity. In Shakespeare's The Rape of Lucrece, the rape victim is de-personified and portrayed as a commodity of exchange between men. Heywood's later drama similarly objectifies Lucrece, and renders her rape parodically: in both cases, this exemplar of chastity is ultimately destroyed.;"The Appetite for Violence Against Women: the case of Lavinia in Titus Andronicus," represents the culmination of the previous chapters' analysis. Because society condemned women who chose to discuss their rapes, men who were accused of rape were infrequently prosecuted. The popularity of Roman rape narratives, both in print and on stage, may have taught women that to discuss rape was to put herself outside the limits of respectable society.
