Knowledge worker perceptions of telework policy in the New York Metropolitan area: A qualitative descriptive study.

This qualitative descriptive case study, Knowledge Worker Perceptions of Telework in the New York Metropolitan Area, was conducted to explore the perceptions of knowledge workers who commute to a physical workplace in the New York Metropolitan area (NYMA). In-depth interviews were conducted with fourteen NYMA commuters who are knowledge workers. To create geographic triangulation, two knowledge workers from Southern United States and two knowledge workers from Western United States were interviewed, totaling 18 in-depth interviews. Methodological triangulation was used to explore the efficiency and effectiveness of methods used in qualitative data collection processes, and to further the research for use of online qualitative data collection. The data were analyzed using Moustakas' modified Van Kaam method. The study included the examination of issues concerning a priori themes of organizational leadership aligned with effective use of information and communication technology (ICT), knowledge worker Quality-of-Life (QoL), and environmental factors. The issues were examined as the issues relate to telework policy and organizational budgets. Leadership can review the benchmark outcomes and recommendations to determine how results can be translated to organizations concerning telework policy implementation. The five themes developed were (a) expansion of the definition of telework; (b) organizational leadership; (c) information and communication technology; (d) worker quality of life; and (e) environmental factors. A result of data analysis and interpretation inspired the creation of Slaughter's Telework Policy Model Guide to Universal Code Work (STPMGUCW) entity for inclusion in a proposed global Telework decision-making database tool.
