Data from a representative sample survey of US residents were utilized to investigate the association between GL and metabolic syndrome. In all subjects, multivariate adjusted HDL concentrations decreased across quartiles of GL intake from 1.32 to 1.25 mmol/L (P 0.007). GL was inversely related to HDL in men (r2 = 0.20; P 0.0001) but not in women (P = 0.39). In men, HDL decreased across GL quartiles from 1.27 to 1.16 mmol/L. No association was observed between GL and waist circumference, triacylglycerol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose in both sexes. In men, GL was associated with metabolic syndrome prevalence in age and race-ethnicity adjusted (OR 0.71; P for trend = 0.005) and multivariate adjusted models (OR 0.56; P for trend = 0.003). However, no clear trend was identified across quartiles of intake. GL was not associated with prevalence of metabolic syndrome in women (P = 0.23).
