The Problem. African American women face challenges on the road to success working in collegiate athletic departments. They are underrepresented in roles of leadership in collegiate athletic departments. The purpose of this study is to investigate this phenomenon for a better understanding of why African American women are underrepresented in roles of leadership within collegiate athletic departments.;The Method. A blend of qualitative research approaches including narrative, phenomenology, and ethnography qualitative studies were used to help the researcher understand and investigate the central phenomenon. What are some of the challenges that prevent African American women from attaining leadership roles within collegiate athletic departments? Researcher e-mailed survey invitations to acquire participants for the study, and several potential participants responded immediately. The responding participants were asked to submit a vita/resume and bio for qualifications purposes. Five African American women were selected for the survey. A survey questionnaire was discussed with participants and their statements were recorded with their permission.;Results. The results of the study revealed that there are many challenges faced by African American women working in collegiate athletic departments. Predominately white institution stereotypes, gender discrimination, employment discrimination, an abundance of career duties-over worked and underpaid, cultural differences, feelings of isolation, lack of support systems, cold campus environments, unfair treatment, sexism, and lack of mentor programs are some of the issues revealed in the data. When considering at one time, women were not allowed to participate in male sports, we have come a long ways. However, the battle is not over as of yet. Equality for the work of African American women working in roles of leadership within collegiate athletic departments does not exist. In order for change to occur, there is still more work to be done, discussions on the matter advances the cause.
