The choral singing of the Negro spiritual versus the singing of contemporary gospel without harming the vocal apparatus: A choral concept.

Because of vocal abuse and improper technique many accomplished singers now appear to have some indication of damaged vocals. Overall this could impact negatively the quality of the choral performance. In view of this, the purpose of this study is to identify concepts that will help the choral conductor to prevent damage to the voices in choirs while performing the Negro spiritual or contemporary gospel. Furthermore, this study will provide recommendations that will promote proper vocal health for the singer.;The singing of the Negro spiritual versus contemporary gospel from a choral perspective warrants careful consideration and study. Both genres are contrasting in their performance as well as their vocal production. Many choirs attempt to sing these genres, but lack the tonal colors and vocal stamina necessary to produce a tone stylistically required in these genres. From a performance perspective in the choral setting, ideas and concepts will be discussed in a concise approach. This document will focus on the vocal/choral singing of both genres in their authenticity and ethnicity without abusing or harming the vocal apparatus.;During the past decade, there has been an increase of school, college, church and community choirs programming Negro spirituals and contemporary gospel repertoire in concerts and in church worship services. Each conductor has a unique way of interpreting these two genres. This study is designed to provide a resource for the choral conductor. The findings of this dissertation are derived from extensive reading and research as well as from personal interviews with gospel and classical singers, choral directors, and voice instructors. The findings are summarized into two broad categories as they relate to the problem of inquiry: (1) The observations that negatively impact on the voice are fatigue from improper techniques and improper vowel formation; (2) The impact of the absence of or incorrect training of the singer; oversinging when the instruments are not properly balanced with the choir and/or voices. It is believed that these recommendations, when implemented, will improve and maintain an elevated level of music vocal artistry. Furthermore, this study will provide recommendations that will aid to promote good vocal health to the performers.
