One of the most critical driving situations is the loss of directional control. For this research, a 2003 Ford Windstar was considered as a representative vehicle and the ADAMS multibody dynamics software was used to develop a vehicle model. The mathematical model was validated by comparison with conventional analytical models. Full-scale experimental tests were run with the experimental vehicle to further validate that the ADAMS built-in driver model is representative of actual driver behaviour. A representative electronic stability control (ESC) algorithm was developed and implemented in Fortran then interfaced to ADAMS to represent the ESC system. It was then customized to represent the different potential failure modes for various sensors detecting longitudinal velocity, steering wheel angle, and yaw rate during a standard double lane-change manoeuvre. Simulation results were analyzed. From this study it was concluded that the effect of the failure modes on the vehicle behaviour was significant and could lead to large lane excursions and potential loss of control. On the other hand, the positive benefits of ESC in safely completing aggressive manoeuvres was demonstrated.
