The purpose of this sequential mixed methods study was to gather nursing instructors' reports of the strategies they use to promote professionalism in baccalaureate nursing students, through the demonstration of professional values, in the clinical setting. The conceptual model of professionalism and professional values as put forth in the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (2008) guided this study. The professional values of interest were altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice, as outlined in AACN (2008).;Data were collected in two phases, the survey phase and the telephone interview phase. A researcher-developed survey was used for the survey phase; it was composed of questions about effective strategies for promoting baccalaureate nursing students' demonstration of the core AACN (2008) professional values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice in the clinical setting, which yielded quantitative data. There were also open-ended items included in the survey, which allowed respondents to add as much detail as they liked about the instructional strategies. The second phase of the study was the telephone interview phase. The approach selected for the telephone interviews was the standardized open-ended interview. Specifically, the interview guide followed the principles of Flanagan's (1954) CIT.;Study participants reports of strategies that promoted professionalism in baccalaureate nursing students in the clinical setting revealed that real life application, reflective conversation and small group discussion were effective instructional strategies. Additionally, interviewees also identified role modeling as an effective instructional strategy for promoting professionalism among nursing students.
