The paradigm of narrative irony cannot only be traced within the pages of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms, but the analysis of these early Hemingway works along such archetypal tenets leads to an enhanced understanding of the overall meaning of the novels. The identification of the elements of narrative irony within these texts leads not only to a discussion of Hemingway's heroic code and his sense of morality, but also to an understanding of Hemingway's place in literary history.
