The researcher investigated the relationship between perceived coach behavior and the emotional levels of intercollegiate tennis players in Taiwan. The study subjects included both male and female coaches and athletes on these teams. The study was based on the assumption that the emotional level of an athlete is one of the factors that can build motivation to train and influence performance in competition. The study used a non-experimental cross-sectional research design in which data was collected over a 24-hour period prior to and after the commencement of a tennis competition in Taiwan. The instruments used for data collection were the LBDQ developed by Stodgill (1963) and Bass (1990), and the SEQ developed by Jones et al (2005). The sample subjects consisted of 196 athletes and 53 coaches representing members and coaches from 50 intercollegiate tennis teams in Taiwan. The subjects in the study were asked to complete the LBDQ questionnaire at the outset of the data collection process. The participants were also asked to complete the SEQ questionnaire at four time intervals consisting of the day before a competition, the morning of a competition, just prior to the commencement of a competition, and immediately after the commencement of the competition. The data provided by the instruments were calculated to provide descriptive statistics and to determine if there was a correlation between the leadership factors as measured by the LBDQ and the emotions of the athletes as measured by the SEQ. The findings of the study indicated that there was a correlation between the leadership behaviors of coaches as perceived by athletes in some of the dimensions measured by the LBDQ and some of the emotional dimensions as measured by the SEQ. The findings further indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the genders in the influence of the perceived leadership behaviors of the coaches on the emotional state of the athletes. In addition, the correlation grew stronger for female athletes as the competition approached. The findings of the study also indicated a correlation between the perceptions of the athletes' and coaches leadership behaviors and the performance at the time of competition.
