The primary objective of this work is the study of mythical spaces in the contemporary narrative from Castilla y Leon. From that objective I propose the recompilation of several characteristics, typical of certain kind of mythical space that we have in these novels. The hypothesis of this dissertation is that, in fact, there is a creation of mythical space in the novels I study. From the selected works I set myself to trace the common lines that those spaces share.;The literary corpus is made up of three novels: La lluvia amarilla (1988) by Julio Llamazares, La sonadora (2002) by Gustavo Martin Garzo, and El reino de Celama (2003) by Luis Mateo Diez. In my opinion, they share an essential characteristic: the coexistence of the present and the past, which confrontation originates the story. The collision of these two temporal levels is one of the mechanisms that facilitate the creation of mythical spaces. Place and inhabitants share the same fate, so both of them form a combination without possible division.;As regards the theoretical frame, it is evident that there are many interpretations on the topic of "space", but the starting point seems to converge: The most important is to overcome the conception of "space" as something only physical. We are referring here to a space beyond the touchable reality. This feature is the base of the mythical space.;Edward Soja is following the same idea also: "This process of producing spatiality begins with the body" (43). In a similar way, he points out that the human being is the one who model the space, even though the space is first created by men. The result is that one reflects in the other.;Also I am going to bring into play to Henry Lefebvre, which ideas are followed by Soja in many ways, especially when he works on the topic of "The Third Space", conceived as an organism made up of the double perspective we stated before: "In this alternative or "third" perspective, the spatial specificity of urbanism is investigated as fully lived space, a simultaneously real-and-imagined, actual and virtual" (Lefebvre 11).;From all these ideas, the critic Joseph M. Catala Domenech gives us a definition of what it is possible to considerate as "mythical space": territories half way between the objective and the subjective, in a perfect equilibrium between the truth and the false: "un no-lugar compuesto por el deseo de cada uno de los personajes y alimentados por los influjos de su memoria" (57) We have, on these brief lines the indispensable relation between myth and memory. That connection represents one of the columns of this study.;In short, this dissertation proposes the existence of a "mythical space" created on some of the most recent novels written by authors from Castilla y Leon. These "spaces" are possible thanks to the coexistence of objective qualities- the physic place where the narration takes place- and subjective qualities- the particular vision of the narrator and characters on that space. Its mixture makes the reality cloudy and brings closer a forgotten memory, which is briefly recovered.
