摘要

This research was conducted to understand the relative state of solar energy in China and the United States and to make a prediction as to the likely level of the technology in each country in the near future, based on current trajectories.Energy security is one of the most fundamental goals of any government, and solar energy is poised to tip the balance away from control of fossil fuels being central to modem national security objectives. Solar energy is perhaps the best tool available to help countries end their reliance on fossil fuels. As the two largest economies-and two largest carbon emitters-it is important to understand where both of the uniquely positioned nations of China and the United States are heading in order to gain an idea of which will most likely be taking the leadership role in mitigating what is arguably the most critical issue currently facing the world. In order to do a comparative analysis, there was an extensive literature review and-because this is a fast-evolving and current topic-also extensive research from news outlets and various international bodies collecting statistics on various related topics.Data was analyzed to understand how the two countries have evolved in their respective solar industries and where they will likely be over the near term, and what this will mean for the world. The findings show that, barring an extreme change in circumstances in the near future,China is far better positioned to become the global leader in solar energy, both in production and deployment but also likely in innovation. This will have a profound impact on the world economy as well as on sovereignty, the balance of world power, and especially on environmental sustainability.
