Even though the 4,112-km-long expressway network in Korea as of December 2013 playsrna very important role in passenger- and cargo-transportation, there is no accurate data forrnthe amount of passengers and cargos transported via expressways. However, the numberrnof vehicles moving through expressways can be easily estimated out using data producedrnfrom the Toll Collection System (TCS) and the Vehicle Detection System (VDS). Currently,rnthe Center for Korea Transport Database provides the total amount of passengers andrncargos transported in Korea via roadways, railways, air transport, and marine transport inrnthe units of million persons per year, million person-km per year, million tons per year, andrnmillion ton-km per year. However, the amount of passengers and cargos transported viarnexpressways were not estimated so far. On the other hand, the European Union RoadrnFederation, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), andrnWorld Road Association (PIARC) provide the information regarding the amount ofrnpassengers and cargos transported via expressways in person-km and ton-km. This studyrnwas initiated to estimate the amount of passengers and cargos transported viarnexpressways in person-km and ton-km in Korea.
