Multimodal transport of passengers and goods is regarded one key factor to support a more efficient and sustainable transport. Multimodal transport chains are set up in order to combine the strengths and offset the weaknesses of various transportation options. The road system is more and more required to provide support for the needs for these transport forms. Multimodal transport chains link roads and rails, motorized and non-motorized transport, consider the separation of car use and car ownership, the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and containerized goods transport.rnMoreover global mega trends such as digitalization, specialisation, miniaturisation and communication require a different approach to administration of roads. Like in a neural network the nodes and connections between modes and users become more and more important, the simple linking and alignment of roads loose relevance. Hence today roads are required to fulfil different needs than just 10 years ago, their usage patterns change.rnSocieties worldwide are at different stages in following these megatrends. Road administrations around the world are forced to deal with these rapid and fundamental changes. They influence the planning, maintenance and management of roads as well as their financing and administration. Thus the exchange of experiences made and lessons learned along this way is an essential task for the World Road Association.rnBased on input provided by the National Reports received as well as based on the findings and conclusion elaborated by the Technical Committees of Strategic Theme 1 the situation and future challenges of road and transport administrations will be presented within the Strategic Direction Session. The session will cover the current approach how administrations worldwide already deal with multimodality as well as the influence on re-organising and re-structuring within administrations. Advantages and handicaps of various types of administrations will be discussed, taking into account the various views of different stakeholders, stages of development and geographical regions.
