SIMULATION OF UNSTEADY FLOW IN RIVER NETWORKS IN SHANGHAI AREA

The river networks in the Shanghai area is a complicated river system consisting of more than 4 hundreds named channels with various dimensions and more than 170 gates, locks and pumping stations. The river networks is strongly influenced by tides, Typhoon surges and heavy rains. In order to make an appropriate plan of flood control and water quality control for urban and rural area of Shanghai City, the improved NWS FLDWAV model was used for simulation of the unsteady flow in the river networks. The NWS FLDWAV model was enhanced by adding runoff model, modified solution technique, more sophisticated gate operation technique, etc. The model was calibrated with two sets of field data of which one was a water monitoring process consisting of complex combination of several gates and pumping stations operations under strong tidal action and heavy rain. The results from computations were well agreed with field data. The model is proved to be robust for simulating unsteady in river networks with various degrees of complex structure.
