The Project SMART (Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel) in Malaysia includes among othersrnthe construction of a 9.7 km long TBM-driven tunnel with a bored diameter of 13.21 m. The tunnelrnserves dual purposes: firstly, it will avoid floods in the city center, which occur frequently during rainyrnperiods; secondly, the central section of the structure will serve as a road tunnel. Only in cases ofrnheavy rain, the different road decks will be closed. An innovative idea that will be realized for the firstrntime worldwide. The challenges of this project consist of the large tunnel diameter in combinationrnwith small radii of curves of min. 250 m along the alignment. In addition, the tunnel has to bernconstructed under severe geotechnical conditions within the city center of Kuala Lumpur. The lecturernwill deal with the northern section in general and the problems encountered to date during tunneling.
