The quantity of groundwater discharged into a tunnel planned for a future KTX line was estimated byrnmeans of an empirical formula and by the help of numerical modelling. The amount of water rechargernin the studied area was calculated based on the analysis of data related to groundwater level variationrnand with an empirical equation governing groundwater recharge rate. Quantity of groundwaterrndischarged into the 10km long tunnel varied from 228,000 to 353,000m3/day when the empiricalrnformula is used for the estimation. Using numerical modelling, the estimated quantity was found to bernbetween 14,148 and 99,200m3/day considering reduction of hydraulic conductivity based on tunnelrnlining.
