The operation ventilation in super-long road tunnels is always a significant part of thesustainable operation and maintenance of road tunnels which accounts for a big part ofenergy consumption. Thus the utilization of natural wind in extra-long tunnels has greateconomic value and social significance. In addition, the pressure difference exists betweenthe tunnel portal and the shaft or inclined shaft makes the application of natural wind forenergy-saving ventilation possible, and using of the natural wind in undergroundengineering has the technical feasibility. The deep reasons for the huge energyconsumption in operation ventilation are the lack of consideration about the potentiality innatural wind for the ventilation and the design method for the energy-saving ventilationusing natural wind. The design concept for the energy-saving ventilation by takingadvantage of natural wind is proposed in this study, that is, taking full advantage of naturalwind, or using a small amount of mechanical ventilation devices as the auxiliary andaccessary part to induce and control the wind achieving the purpose the ventilation intunnels. In the specific implementation, the basement of taking advantage of natural windfor the energy-saving ventilation is to obtain its annual regulations of the speed anddirection. And the designing wind speed meeting a certain guaranteed rate can be gainedwith year-round data of the speed and direction of natural wind in tunnels. Then theenergy-saving design depending on different wind speeds and directions will contributes toa situation where the ventilation system makes maximum use of natural energy andreduces manual interventions.
