WASTES FROM HIGHWAY OPERATION SERVICE AS MATERIAL FOR CO-COMBUSTION IN POWER PLANTS

The main task of the highway operation service is to guarantee the safety and ease oftraffic. The maintenance of unpaved shoulders is an important part of it. Cutting grass,trimming bushes and trees as well as peeling of the shoulders at the roadside on a regularbasis is very important to avoid traffic accidents. This generates waste, which is part of thetwo to three million tons of waste per year produced by road maintenance in Germany. Achemical analysis shows that the limits for disposing the waste from highway maintenancein a landfill are exceeded. Therefore, new disposal technologies must be found.One possibility for using such waste is co-combustion in municipal solid waste powerplants or biomass heat and power plants which was evaluated in a first step by means ofchemical and mineralogical characterisation of original and sintered materials in alaboratory scale. The contents of combustible organics with high calorific value of somewastes and the mineral composition of the soil-like materials from unpaved shoulderssuggest co-combustion as an appropriate disposal route. This enables an energy recoveryon the one hand and could also be beneficial in view of the bottom ash quality on the other.
