Earthship is a term coined by the architect Michael Reynolds whose design philosophy is to produce buildings that produce no stress or depletion on the earth’s resources. The Brighton Earthship has taken the design principles of glass and mass incorporating large areas of south facing glass backed by a thermally heavyweight structure for the construction of a visitor centre within Stanmer Park Brighton. The thermal mass is provided by the rear wall of the building constructed from used car tyres, rammed with chalk. This paper describes the principles of design of the Brighton Earthship and evaluates the thermal performance of the thermal store over the first year of measurement. It identifies how the thermal store has risen in temperature by 2°C during the monitoring period.
