Imaging applications are discussed, where object shape and permittivity distribution are estimated from scattered field data. Special emphasis is given to linear inverse scattering algorithms and the use of prior information. We investigate both the limitations as well as the strengths of linear algorithms from various examples. These include imaging of generic targets from incomplete micro-wave data sets, the detection of anti-personal plastic land mines, synthetic aperture radar for foliage penetration as well as the determination of the surface roughness of multimode fibers.
