Recent development on Decision Support System(DSSs) design, has suggested that as the capabilities of systems expand, the need for designing an effective and flexible interface increases significantly. This study focus on the user interface, to improve screen clarity and readabilities, decrease visual fatigue, and improve cognitive abilities in processing the displayed material. A well designed screen can increase human processing speed, reduce human error, reduce computers processing time, and enhance decision making productivity. Maintenance management can be as a process of decision-making in the field of maintenance planning, control and implementation at different levels of the organization structure. This is a very complex task for plant personnel and system designers since it requires skillful decision-making and a broad knowledge to handle the significant amount of filed maintenance information, component design, failure mode characteristics and maintenance conditions. Historically, technical consideration in DSS of maintenance management design have received a lot of attention, but human factors involvement have not been well understood or have been neglected entirely. Consequently, human perceptual processing capabilities have not been adequately considered in the design, resulting in systems that do not conform to user need. This paper examines the role of user, task, system characteristics in determining display method, and advocate a cognitive approach to system-user interface design within the context of a DSS of maintenance management.
