Ornamental Rocks in Romania

In Romania, there are many and various ornamental rock deposits, part of which are quarried out from ancient times. The largest one is the Ruschita marble deposit, where the mining activity started in 1883 and operates even today. In this paper are presented in short the most important igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic ornamental rock deposits from Romania, with their physical - mechanical characteristics. For these deposits, located in various regions of the country and mainly in the Alpine - Carpathion and Hercinic units, also the mining methods and techniques applied in quarrying activity are described. There is as well an overview of historical evolution of techniques applied in quarrying activity and the current situation of mining out this type of deposits in Romania. Aspects from Ruschita, which is the most representative Romanian marble quarry, are also exposed. In the final part is revealed the tendency manifested in the Romanian stone industry and the perspectives for the future.
