Rising energy prices and outside pressures such as increased global wanning is forcing industry to improve energy efficiency. As a consequence, a project has been carried out by SweCast, involving four Swedish sand casting foundries, with the aim of finding a way to analyse production from an energy efficiency point of view. A methodology has been proposed where energy data is collected, analysed and categorised for use in a Discrete Event Simulation model. Simulation results from case studies have shown that it is possible to use existing simulation technologies to analyse and also improve the energy efficiency without too much extra effort. Case studies have shown potential for reducing energy and power use through reduced holding times and more efficient use of available resources.
