One of the current trends is to reduce the weight of automobiles for greater cost effectiveness. Many ferrous castings are being replaced by Al-alloy MMCs, reinforced with a variety of ceramic particles. In the present work an attempt has been made to evaluate the wear behaviour of Al-4% Mg alloy reinforced with γ-Al_2O_3 particle which is supposed to be a more cost effective reinforcement material than the traditional α-Al_2O_3 particles. It has been found that the wear of γ-Al_2O_3 particle reinforced stir-cast composite is less than the base alloy but more than α-Al_2O_3 particle reinforced stir-cast composite.
