The properties, uses, market, reactive mechanism and synthetic methods of insoluble sulfur are described in the paper, the present problems of production and the new trends in research are discussed. Compared and analyzed the gasification process and fusion process, pointed out the merit and defect, raised a point that adopt fusion process is better when the content of IS product is lower than 50 % , and when percent conversion is less than 25% -30 % , gasification process is better; When percent conversion is 30% - 35% , the two ways is equivalent; When percent conversion is 35% - 40% , fusion process is better than gasification process. The effects of various synthesis factor on the rate of reversion of insoluble sulfur synthetized by the heat-molten treatment under ambient pressure were discussed in detail. And discussed that the kinds of sulfur, reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst, catalyst promoter, quenching condition ( hardening liquid, batching off melted sulfur), curing condition, comminution condition and so on affected the percent conversion of IS in fusion process, got the better product condition is: adopt oil sulfur which is recycled from refinery as the material, added catalyst(0. 015% -0.030% to the dosage of sulfur), catalyst promoter(0.10% -0.15% to the dosage of sulfur) and stabilizer (0. 01% — 0.02% to the dosage of sulfur), reacted for 10 — 20min in the temperature of 220 - 250℃ ,then quench the melted sulfur in the water (25 — 30℃), cured, battered to get the finished item.
